Training for teachers in Ożarów – prejudice, discrimination and exclusion of students

The meeting focused on prejudice and discrimination in the school environment, with particular attention to the situation of students with migration experience, as well as those who may experience social exclusion.

The training had a practical workshop-based format and was based on the analysis of specific examples and work with educational materials, including a multimedia presentation, fragments of the film “Blue Eyed”, materials related to the Jane Elliott experiment, as well as motivational recordings. Participants took part in exercises and discussions that helped them better understand the mechanisms behind prejudice and their impact on students’ functioning.

During the training, the following issues were discussed, among others:

  • the causes of prejudice and the growing hostility towards certain social groups, including Ukrainian citizens staying in Poland,
  • the results of social research on Poles’ attitudes towards refugees,
  • various forms of discrimination at school – both direct and indirect,
  • the phenomenon of cyberbullying and exclusion from the peer group,
  • the emotions and psychological consequences experienced by students exposed to discrimination.

Particular attention was devoted to practical tools that teachers can use in their everyday work, including exercises for tutor periods that support the development of openness, empathy, and the prevention of exclusion.

The meeting created a space for reflection on the role of the school as a safe place for all students, as well as for the exchange of experiences among teachers. Participants emphasized the great value of practical examples and the possibility of relating the discussed issues to real school situations.
